People like Donald Trump and Ted Cruz need to check the moral and religious compasses. Their hateful rhetoric directed at immigrants and minorities flies in the face of the teachings of Jesus Christ. Not sure why I haven't heard more people site Matthew 25:35 when the republican evangelical base steadfastly refuse to accept any refugees of war because they are Muslim. Whether they are from Syria, Iraq, Somalia or Afghanistan, or whether they are undocumented workers from Latino countries.
How can somebody who claims to be a good Christian so blatantly ignore one of the main teachings of Jesus Christ? For those of you not familiar with the bible verse I speak of let me give it you in detail. Here is what it says:
35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,1 × References for Matthew 25:35
37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' 40 "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'5 × References for Matthew 25:40
42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' 44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' 45 "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'9

Why then when Ted Cruz said he would be willing to take in Christians only from Syria did no Christian stand up and say this to him? Or when Trump appeared on stage and brought his bible for those to see did no one stand and mention this teaching of Jesus to him? This verse mentions nothing about ones religion, but of all of those in need, whether it was those receiving the aid, or those giving the aid. As a Catholic it was the first thing that came to mind when Trump said he would close our borders to those in need, would kick out those who came here seeking relief from whatever torment they found themselves facing. And would refuse shelter to one group in particular.
It is my opinion that Jesus would call both Trump and Cruz Hypocrites at the least, and would at most would speak verse 41 through 45 directly to them and their supporters. So you see to me you cannot be a good Christian if you apply this tenet only as you see fit, it must be applied equally across the board regardless of who it is in need.
