Dear Mr. President,
I'm writing this letter to remind you that while the Syrian Civil War needs to be over, entering into any kind of agreement which leaves Assad in power is a bad one. Please do not agree to that when Putin visits you this week.
I'm sure there is no need to remind you that Assad is guilty of Crimes Against Humanity and is more a War Criminal than Head of State. For over four years he was waged war against his own people. He has starved them to death and into submission. He has used crude barrel bombs against schools and hospitals. He gassed women and children to death with Sarin in E. Ghouta. His Shabiha militia has orchestrated dozens of massacres against civilian towns and are guilty of ethnic cleansing.
Tens of thousands have gone missing, or have been tortured to death in his jails and prisons. Amongst the missing is Human Rights activist Razan Zaitouneh who has been missing since December 2013. The Syrian Fourth Armored has leveled and besieged entire cities, or sections of them, like Homs and Hama. And all during this time Putin has been supplying the weapons and ammunition, first with the gun running ship Chariot, now with direct intervention.
While all of this was going on, Putin has invaded Eastern Ukraine, annexed Crimea, and his troop supported rebels have shot down civilian flight MH-17 killing all of it's nearly 300 passengers on July 17, 2014.
It is my opinion you can inform Putin that he is welcome to join our efforts to destroy ISIS, but under no circumstances should Assad retain power, or be part of that effort. Assad has lost all claim of legitimacy when he gassed his own people, before that actually, when his thugs tortured and murdered the child Hamza Al Khateeb for spray painting anti-government slogans.
Like I have said this war needs to be over for the peoples sake, they have suffered far too long. The 5 million refugees are desperate for whatever assistance we can give, and have always looked up to us for guidance. But to achieve that both Assad and ISIS must go, or be destroyed. At any rate both must be held accountable and brought to justice for their crimes.
I am confident you have more facts than I have, and will tell Putin and Assad where they both can go.
Thank you for your time Mr. President,
