Enough using the Russians and Chinese as an excuse not to help the Syrian people who are starving to death, dying of exposure or succumbing to infections which are treatable with basic antibiotics. While it is very true it is the Russians stymieing any international action against Assad, or relieving the Syrian people with humanitarian aid, the West is too quick to say, "Oh okay, our hands are tied again." It is a convenient excuse as we watch, or not watch depending on who you are, while thousands of people die.
A Syrian said the other day, "there are a million things that can be done between military intervention and doing nothing." We are doing almost none of them. At the recent talks in Geneva, it was the Assad regime which thought the opposition should capitulate on their stance that Assad must not be any part of a transitional government. In other words, if the opposition was to say Assad could stay, he would allow in humanitarian aid to to hundreds of thousands who his forces and those of Hezbollah have surrounded and cut off. This is simply criminal, but that shouldn't surprise anyone about the Assad regime. His stance is in violation of the Geneva Conventions which specifically state that civilians and non combatants must be allowed to receive medical and humanitarian attention. Instead he is using starvation as a weapon, along with indiscriminate shelling.
Last September, President Obama declared that if the Assad regime failed to comply with the chemical weapons accord struck to rid Syria of its chemical weapons, that the "United States remains prepared to act." Well, Assad is not complying with the deal, he is falling further and further behind the schedule all agreed to by him, the Russians and ourselves. That action? Why that action would be in the form of a referral to the UN Security Council to pass a resolution. For Christs sake, excuse me. Isn't that still using the Russians as a convenient excuse to do nothing. Because Putin has no soul or conscience means we shouldn't either?
It is as if the world is under instructions not to help the people of Syria even if they can. The world is told that the only way to bring Assad and members of his regime up on charges before the ICC is through the UN Security Council. Another convenient excuse as the Russians will block that. But what we are being told is not the truth, the security council is not the only route. There is a Special Tribunal route, which an NGO can ask the court to convene. Then there is the route where a member state, one which is a party to the Rome Statute, could ask the Chief Prosecutor in the Hague to commence an investigation into War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity that the Assad regime is guilty of.
Everything I have mentioned above just gives Assad more time to kill more people. It is said that this is not genocide because it doesn't meet the definition of trying to wipe out a specific group of people. Hell yeah it is, for he is trying to wipe out the opposition by murdering them, the opposition is a "specific group." In the nine days of "peace talks" nearly two thousand Syrians lost their lives, many of them civilians, many of them killed by "barrel bombs," which are homemade 500 pound bombs capable of leveling an eight story building. In one day alone Assad's air force dropped 17 of them on the city of Aleppo.
Nobody wants a war. All the Syrian people want is for the world to exhaust every effort available to relieve them and get rid of Assad before we wring our hands and continue to say "there is nothing we can do because of the Russians."
