The UN has stopped counting the dead in Syria, again. They did this once before, way back in January of 2012 when the number of dead was nowhere near what it is today. It is more "out of sight, out of mind" than any other reason that the UN doesn't want to publicize the tally. That and the Geneva II talks are to begin on the January 22. The internationally recognized opposition rightfully does not want to take part. You see, rather than Assad being delegitimized by the international community, it is the opposition that has been. The whole process stinks to Holy Heaven. The West never came to the aid of the Syrian people, regardless of what they tell you. For almost three years the US has turned it's back on the people of Syria, although if you listen to the Obama administration they will tell you through their intervention they removed chemical weapons from Syria. They did not however remove Assad, or even remotely attempt to help those who wanted to.
The number of dead seems stuck on 100,000. Well, I'm here to tell you that number hasn't moved since the Assad regime used chemical weapons on Ghouta, located just outside of Damascus. Maybe you remember the 1300 or so civilians who were killed in a sarin gas attack on that August morning. Rather than step in and help remove Assad, Obama backed away from his own "red line." Suddenly this became more about chemical weapons than about those being brutalized by Assad. More about "international norms" than about removing a murderer who had been branded a war criminal time and time again. A killer who defied the Arab League, the UN, and now the US. At the known average rate of 5,000 dead a month, that would put the tally somewhere around 130,000. But this number doesn't take in to account those who have gone "missing," those buried beneath the rubble that Assad's monsters have created out of whole neighborhoods of cities like Homs, Aleppo, and Hama. Nor does it take into account those who starve to death.
The Free Syrian Army was never supplied with weapons it needed from the West. The FSA came into being to protect the civilians that Assad was killing with impunity. They guarded protesters while they demonstrated against Assad. They were and are made up of deserters from the Syrian Army. Men who couldn't fire on their own people as they were being ordered to. Hell, they had to buy their bullets from corrupt Syrian army regulars, I know because I remember reading how desperate the FSA was for ammunition, they were paying up to $4 a bullet, how those bullets would sometimes be filled with TNT. No but the world wanted to listen to Assad's lies, that he was fighting "foreign funded terrorist" later he would add "Islamist" to the line, even before there were any. It was what the West wanted to here. The FSA would grow to include farmers, teachers, mechanics, doctors and people of all walks of life. But you were told by some well placed shills and disinformation that they were Islamist. If that was the case why have they taken the fight to those very same Islamist they are supposed to be?
Anyone who has followed this uprising knows Assad was coached to use certain words and phrases that would catch the sympathy of the West. Oh, the religious fanatics would come, but not for a year and a half after Assad said they were there. In other words, we were fooled, duped into believing he was fighting "our fight." He's been fooling us since he was interviewed by Barbara Walters. I find it ironic that Secretary Kerry wants to sit down and negotiate with members of his regime, while that same regime was the one who hacked into Twitter issuing a false tweet that our President had been injured in a terrorist attack on the White House. How that same regime has hacked into Skype, compromising thousands of accounts. Shortly after the Skype hack, a prominent human rights lawyer, Razan Zaitouneh and the three activists she was with went missing. This too was blamed on on "Islamist." Razan never left Syria, she was one of the original members of the opposition. She is against fanatics as much as she is against Assad. But her disappearance also stinks to Holy Heaven.
Why is it that Assad has a Facebook and Instagram account, when this county has sanctions against doing business with, or assisting his regime in any way? Ever try to call Face book? Good Luck with that. There is so much to tell you about why the suffering people of Syria matter, why it is also against "international norms" to watch people be starved to death, to freeze to death, to die of treatable disease. Why it is against "international norms" for troops to pulverize entire city blocks into rubbish. Why it is against "international norms"to torture children to death. Why it is against "international norms" to bomb bakeries, schools, hospitals, olive presses, and play grounds. Why it is against "international norms" to murder journalists. Why it isn't against "international norms" not to have some country bring this monster up on charges before the ICC." Now we are told that we may "have to live Assad." That he is the "lesser of two evils." For God's sake, forgive me, he is a War Criminal who has gotten away with murder. How is that people don't see that it is Assad that has "set the table" for the instability in all of the front line countries, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.
One third(7+ million) of the population of Syria is homeless. 500,000 are on the verge of starvation and Assad wants this. No Mr. Kerry and President Obama, your are far to accommodating to Assad's enablers. Aleppo is your Benghazi, remember your clarion call that Benghazi would be a bloodbath if Gadhafi was permitted to attack it? Well, Assad has been attacking Aleppo for over one and a half years now. The majority of dead are civilians. The entire world must do two things. Help relieve the refugees of this terrible travesty, and get rid of it's orchestrator. The Syrian people do not want Assad, and they do not want religious fanaticism either.
