It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the death of a fellow journalist, Marie C. Colvin a war correspondent, was killed in Homs Syria. She was an American who worked for the Sunday Times of London. She worked tirelessly to bring the truth the the public about conflicts that ranged from Sri Lanka, to Zimbabwe to Syria. She lost her left eye to shrapnel in Sri Lanka in 2001. Last night she reported a story about a two year old boy who was killed in the shelling of Homs, Syria. Hours later she too became a victim of that shelling. She was brave, tough as nails and was one of the best in her field.
I will always remember her saying "there are no military targets" on the street that she described as being destroyed by Syrian Army shelling. How she described that every house on the block was either damaged or destroyed. She was one of the last western reporters in Homs. No doubt she was deliberately targeted by Assad's forces. In the end it may have been her satellite phone that gave her away. Like I said, she was interviewed by Anderson Cooper of CNN hours before her death. She told him, the government of Syria is "shelling a city of cold starving civilians."

Murdered in Homs, Syria February 22, 2012
Also murdered with her was the French photographer, Remi Ochlik. He was 28 years old. Marie was 56 years old. Jim Clancy said, "Marie would want us to pick up where she left off, that her life would only have meaning if we continue to call Assad the liar that he is, that we continue to tell the truth about what is really happening in Syria." Clancy said he will also miss her sense of humor. "I can't believe she will not be there anymore", he said.
I encourage all of those who are interested in Marie, to research exactly who she was and see what a difference her reporting made. She is one of my heroes.
